13:06 / Exhibition at Museum for Papirkunst, Blokhus, DK
2023

13:06 can be described as “visualizing music visualization”. It is a meeting point for music, psaligraphy (the art of paper-cutting) and digital art. Brought together by Dark Matters, the project’s aim was to develop projected visuals to enhance papercut art created by artist Karen Bit Vejle, which is itself a visualization of Shastakovic’s classical piece Piano Trio No 1, Opus 8.

The music is represented in the background forms in a linear progression from left to right, with the first note being at the left end and the last note being at the right end. There are also visual forms that capture the various elements and characteristics of the music, illustrating the rhythm, themes, crescendos, solo runs of the instruments, and other events in the music.

A lot of the visuals were created using feedback loops, in which the system's output is used as input for the next iteration of the process, resulting in an infinitely evolving quality. This method, combined with projection mapping and custom controls, was used to create a dynamic and complex music visualization system in which ever-changing colors moved across the forms.

The resulting audiovisual experience takes place as part of the core exhibition at the paper art museum, Museum for Papirkunst in Blokhus, Denmark.
